Space mission cyber defense

CyberSAM

2019
JPL · Deployed on 10+ missions

A data collection, analysis, and visualization suite that gives mission operators real-time cyber situational awareness for detecting and diagnosing attacks and anomalies. Featured in TechCrunch's coverage of JPL's cyber defense work.

CAVE

2022
JPL · U.S. Patent 11,425,157

An AI-based reasoning tool for automated cyber risk assessment that translates high-level threat descriptions into system-specific, actionable defense tactics — enabling dramatically faster identification and remediation of cyber risks.

Secure-by-Design for Spacecraft Ground Systems

2024
JPL · NIST partnership

Led an effort in partnership with NIST to integrate systems security engineering principles (NIST SP 800-160) into the engineering lifecycle of the SunRISE spacecraft ground data systems.

IEEE 3536 — Space System Cybersecurity Standard

2023 - 2026
IEEE · Ground Systems Chair

Chaired the ground-systems subgroup for IEEE 3536, the international standard on space system cybersecurity, defining cybersecurity requirements and guidance for the ground systems that support space missions. The "secure-by-component" design paradigm — published at IEEE 3S 2024 — provided the foundational thinking behind the standard.

Cyber training, CTFs & exercises

2021 - 2024
JPL · AIAA · Community

Designed three capture-the-flag competitions for mission engineers and students, a CubeSat hacking workshop at DEF CON, and an international space-cyber tabletop exercise at AIAA ASCEND.

F Prime adversarial assessment

2024
JPL · Research

Adversarial security assessment of NASA's open-source F Prime flight software framework, with findings and recommendations published at SmallSat 2024.
